P. rothschildianum is called the King of Orchids for good reason. Few, if any, other orchid flowers match its striking form and beauty, so it is no surprise that this species has received more FCC awards than any other species. This cross of rothschildianum has produced more awarded plants than any other. Both parents have passed their genes into many of the current generation of top roths, including the very nice 'Val' FCC/AOS x 'Mont Millais' FCC/AOS cross, a more recent cross that has produced many top prize winners. Both 'Charles E.' and 'Borneo' may have come from the Collennette expedition to Borneo in the late 1950s. 'Borneo' is a bit more compact than 'Charles E.', and some of this cross show smaller size as well. Some siblings, however, have very large, stately fans (i.e., growths), with leaf span sometimes exceeding 40 inches (100 cm)! While this cross has been surpassed by 'Rex' x 'Mont Millais' and other crosses, a representative from 'Charles E.' x 'Borneo' will make a fine addition to any orchid collection.
